Polar bears do not hibernate (sleep)

during the winter like other bears.

A pregnant female will create a

maternity den, where she will sleep on and off as she waits to give birth to her cubs in the months

between November and February.

The cubs are born completely helpless and will stay with the mother for at least 2 ½ years.

Polar Bear Cubs

This picture shows a mother polar bear coming up from her maternity snow den.

The cubs will stay in the den until spring. Then they will come out and learn life lessons from their mother.
