Hippos are the biggest river mammals and weigh in at 3 or 4 thousand pounds! When in the water they can sink to the river bottom and walk. Staying under water helps to keep them cool in the hot summer months.

Hippos stay in the water during the day, but venture out on land at night to eat grass –

their main source of food.
